The PM-KISAN Scheme: Supporting Farmers Across India
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) Scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019 with the aim of providing income support to all landholding farmer families in the country. The scheme provides financial benefits to eligible farmers to help them maintain their livelihoods and support their families.
Under the PM-KISAN Scheme, eligible farmers receive an annual sum of Rs 6000, which is split into three installments of Rs 2000 each, paid directly into their bank accounts. The payments are made every four months.
Who Qualifies for Benefits under PM-KISAN?
All landholding farmer families with cultivable land in their names are eligible to receive benefits under the PM-KISAN Scheme.
Exclusions from PM-KISAN
Unfortunately, certain groups are excluded from the PM-KISAN Scheme. This includes institutional landholders, farmer families holding constitutional posts, serving or retired officers and employees of State or Central government, as well as public sector undertakings and government autonomous bodies. Additionally, professionals such as doctors, engineers, and lawyers, and retired pensioners with a monthly pension of over Rs 10,000, as well as those who paid income tax in the last assessment year, are not eligible for the benefits of the scheme.
The PM-KISAN Scheme: For All Farmers, Regardless of Landholding Size
The PM-KISAN Scheme, launched in February 2019, initially only provided benefits to small and marginal farmers’ families with combined landholdings of up to 2 hectares. However, in June of the same year, the government revised the scheme and made it available to all farmers in the country, regardless of their landholding size.
The central government announced its decision to extend the benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme to all 14.5 crore farmers in India, with an annual sum of Rs 6,000 paid directly into their bank accounts. This extension of the scheme means that all farmers, regardless of the size of their landholdings, can now receive the financial support they need to maintain their livelihoods and support their families.
