Voter ID is a legal identity document issued to the citizens of India, who are of or above the age of 18, by the Election Commission of India (ECI). It allows the citizens to cast their votes in the nation’s municipal, assembly and national elections. Voter ID also serves the purpose of identity proof, address proof, age proof etc. required for carrying out the daily activities which require the authentication from the user. It was first introduced in the independent India in 1993, during the tenure of Chief Election Commissioner T. N. Seshan. The Voter ID is also known as Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC).
The Election Commission of India was set up on 25th January, 1950 in accordance with the Constitution of India. The office of ECI consists of Chief Election Commissioner, Election Commissioners and additional commissioners. The office of ECI has the responsibility of conducting the Parliament election, Legislature elections of every state and offices of President and Vice President. Since independence, the commission has been conducting fair elections in the country at regular intervals as mentioned in the Constitution and Electoral Laws.

If the person meets the above-mentioned criteria, download the Form-6 of Election Commission, fill it with your particulars, attach your any ID proof (like Aadhar card, PAN card etc), nationality, age and address and submit it to the Booth Level Officer of your area.

Applications can be submitted online as well on the website of National Voters’ Service Portal (NVSP) https://electoralsearch.in/ . Online process is a lot more convenient than the analog system.
In case, the applicant wants to make changes to the existing voter ID it can be done using Electoral Photo Identity Card number on the NVS portal.
There is also another provision available to check the status of your voter ID card verification or status by dialing a toll number, provided by the officials of the commission. The steps to do so are mentioned below:
One can also get the status of your voter ID by SMS. For availing the details, you’ll have to send a SMS on the helpline issued by your state. This helpline number is different for each state. A particular format is followed while writing the SMS and is then sent to the helpline number of the state.
Once done, the details will be made available to you.
