Voter ID is a legal identity document issued to the citizens of India, who are of or above the age of 18, by the Election Commission of India (ECI). It allows the citizens to cast their votes in the nation’s municipal, assembly and national elections. Voter ID also serves the purpose of identity proof, address proof, age proof etc. required for carrying out the daily activities which require the authentication from the user. It was first introduced in the independent India in 1993, during the tenure of Chief Election Commissioner T. N. Seshan. The Voter ID is also known as Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC).

The Election Commission of India was set up on 25th January, 1950 in accordance with the Constitution of India. The office of ECI consists of Chief Election Commissioner, Election Commissioners and additional commissioners. The office of ECI has the responsibility of conducting the Parliament election, Legislature elections of every state and offices of President and Vice President. Since independence, the commission has been conducting fair elections in the country at regular intervals as mentioned in the Constitution and Electoral Laws.

It is considered one of the major documents to prove your identity of being an Indian. It serves as a Travel document to travel to the neighboring countries of India like Nepal and Bhutan by air or land.

HOW TO OBTAIN A VOTER ID CARD:

To apply for a voter card, the person has to be

  1. the citizen of India
  2. attained the age of 18 years

If the person meets the above-mentioned criteria, download the Form-6 of Election Commission, fill it with your particulars, attach your any ID proof (like Aadhar card, PAN card etc), nationality, age and address and submit it to the Booth Level Officer of your area.

There are some people who are exempted or considered ineligible to vote. They are those with “unsound mind”, guilty of “corrupt practices” and offenses.

Applications can be submitted online as well on the website of National Voters’ Service Portal (NVSP) https://electoralsearch.in/ . Online process is a lot more convenient than the analog system.

In case, the applicant wants to make changes to the existing voter ID it can be done using Electoral Photo Identity Card number on the NVS portal.

HOW TO CHECK VOTER ID CARD STATUS by ONLINE:

  • Visit https://nvsp.in/ and log in with your credentials.
  • Click on ‘Track Application Status’
  • Put reference ID and click on Track Status.
  • The status will be displayed on your screen.

CRITERIA To CHECK VOTER ID VERIFICATION

There is also another provision available to check the status of your voter ID card verification or status by dialing a toll number, provided by the officials of the commission. The steps to do so are mentioned below:

  • Dial 1950 (the toll number)
  • Provide all the asked details by the concerned authorities
  • Your status will transfer to you.

One can also get the status of your voter ID by SMS. For availing the details, you’ll have to send a SMS on the helpline issued by your state. This helpline number is different for each state. A particular format is followed while writing the SMS and is then sent to the helpline number of the state.

Once done, the details will be made available to you.

  • Firstly open the NVSP Portal , You can easily to link Aadhar card to Voter ID online.
  • Put your local details such as Name , District, Date of birth, and father name.
  • After fill above details click on search Button , all details showing in front of you.
  • Press on “Feed Aadhaar No.” option which is showing on the left-hand side of your screen.
  • After click on it , put your all details such as registered mobile number, Aadhaar card, voter ID number and Aadhaar number,
  • Click on submitting button.
  • And you see your Aadhar card successfully registered with your Voter ID.

EASY STEPS TO CHECK YOUR NAME IN THE ELECTORAL ROLL:

  • Visit the website of NVSP https://nvsp.in/
  • Click on “Search in Electoral Roll”
  • You have 2 options between “Search by detail” or “Search by EPIC Number”
  • Fill in the details and enter the captcha code being displayed on the screen.
  • Click on the Search button.
  • Your information will appear on the screen. At the bottom of the screen an option of downloading the details would also be made available to you.

CORRECTION OF ENTERIES:

  • Visit https://nvsp.in/ and log in.
  • Press the button on the “Correction in Personal Details” displayed on the left side of the screen.
  • Click on Forms option. A list of forms will showing on the screen.
  • Choose Form 8. Choose the language, whether English or Hindi as per your convenience.
  • Fill in the details and click on Submit button.

Similarly, “transportation within assembly” can be done.

Repeat the entire process mentioned before.

Click on Forms option, displayed on the center of the screen. Choose Form 8A – Transportation within Assembly.

Fill all the details and click on the Submit button.

  • Click on the option “Citizen Complaint Corner” displayed below the web page.
  • Put your mobile number, email address and captcha code on the new page on your screen.
  • Enter the OTP sent on your mobile phone and click on verify.
  • Enter the asked details like your name, DOB, gender etc. and click on Submit.
  • This will complete your registration process.
  • Now, login using the details you made your account with.
  • Provide your suggestions/information or register your grievances.

To Track your complaints, visit https://eci.gov.in/

  • Go to Citizen Complaint Corner and click on “Track Your Complaint”
  • Enter the complaint number or reference number allotted to you while registering your complaint. Click on show Status.
  • The status of your application would be displayed.
